I have been accused of being hateful a lot in a couple of threads a while back. I will he honest and admit that I do not want to appear to be a bad person; yes even I have some political correctness in me. So I asked myself
1.What is hate?
2.Is hate always bad?
My favorite online dictionary said this about Hate
hate–verb (used with object)
1.to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward; detest: to hate the enemy; to hate bigotry.
2.to be unwilling; dislike: I hate to do it.
–verb (used without object)
3.to feel intense dislike, or extreme aversion or hostility.
4.intense dislike; extreme aversion or hostility.
5.the object of extreme aversion or hostility.
When I try to say what I personally understand Hate to be, I find I have a problem, my first thought is – The feelings that motivate the actions one takes that has a negative effect on others and self. But that is not accurate because stopping someone from doing something wrong often has a negative effect on the person corrected, seldom is that correction done out of hate. Next I thought that hate was causing harm to a person without good cause. I have had friends hurt me by accident so that is not a good fit. So I change it to that hate was deliberately causing harm to a person without good cause. Still not the best fit, there are psycho's that kill and harm because they like the feeling, not hate. So what about actions motivated by jealously, by feelings of being judged and inferiority? Yes that might be a good way to define hate
I understand that many will say, what about thoughts, they can be hateful, this I can agree with, but how can I judge them, I can not know what experiences you have had that effect your outlook. Even judging your actions is not a good method, unless I know the thoughts in your head, I can not make a real judgment.. Let me give some examples.
Understand the subject was Gay Marriage, and the fallowing statements are a cut and paste from the threads.
I made a statement on a thread, "I want to live in a society that is moral", the reply was
"I want to live in a society that is moral." – "HATE is not moral, harming others is not moral, taking rights from others is not moral, inflicting your views on others in this way is not moral; you are not moral".
On another thread, this was said "All you do, by coming here is demonstrate just how much you HATE. 31 comments in this thread alone demonstrates the intensity of that HATE. This is a publicly viewable discussion, we all see that, the Hate, the intensity; the hypocrisy of someone in a religion that suffered turning around to make others suffer the same fate or worse. This is infantile, childish, spiteful and very very public. You do yourself great shame by coming here posting this HATE-filled garbage. "
"Several more posts - "Gramps - it is not about disagreement; that fact they you want to see it that way suggests you are immature and insenbsitive to the feelings of others."
Coming here is a HATE, Bigoted, Trollish step - you are messing up someone else's seed with off topic and often childish tripe, ignoring when it is demonstrated that you are wrong
Gramps you make Mormon look more like Moron - and, no I didn't miss the "i" at the end. The only reason you came here was to spread your HATE - if you did not hate you would not have made the effort
Coming here is a HATE, Bigoted, Trollish step - you are messing up someone else's seed with off topic and often childish tripe, ignoring when it is demonstrated that you are wrong. I was in fact off topic, because I was answering some question I was askedd
"The sole reason you would come here to post negative comments is HATE. If you had no HATE you either would not come here (apathy / neutrality) or would post positive comments (love / Christianity)"
"You have demonstrated by your actions: HATE "
"No Gramps, you demonstrate by your actions and words that you are a bigot, that you are a troll. It's not about accepting (note: it is accept not except which you keep using - minor grammar error I usually ignore and you are not alone in this) what others say or you are a bigot; you demonstrate that all on your own, you demonstrate the HATE just by being here whether anyone else comments or not "
My first response was, the pot calling the kettle black, they are just haters to. Then as I thought about it, I realized that it is very possible they thought that, because they could see no reason to be against Gay Marriage, that I had no reason, and was in fact doing it out of hate. I have tried to explain my reason from time to time and because part of that reason is my religious belief, they will not except it as valid and dismiss it with out a justifiable reason. That does bug the heck out of me, but it does not make them haters.
Is hate always bad, my knee jerk reaction is to say no; are we not to hate evil? As I have thought about it the idea came to me that the evil in myself I should hate, but I have no way to judge what appears as evil outside of me, and what is the true motive of those that I consider evil. I will be quick to say that thou I should not hate them, that does not mean except them, or enable them. This needs more thought on my part.
I have two questions, if one side will not compromise and imposes their solution on the other, is that fair? Next is there anyway that we can learn to understand each other? Oh yes not to be forgotten can I be a hater if I do not feel hate, a little explanation will help.
