Patterns in history, I was thinking about our society, the groups of people that we live with. I was also thinking about our culture, the way we live. I understand that I might have defined those words wrong, but what do I know? I am just a old farmer.
The motivation for this article is a statement a friend made; women got the vote, blacks got equality, some day we will get Gay Marriage. I have thought about that for three days now. In my friends mind those three objectives are the same thing, in mine they are not. My explanation is very round about, please stay with me.
To start assume two small societies, each with a very different culture. Society A is a group where the members tend to be willing to be lead. Their chosen leader teaches several things.
#1 - Do unto others as you want done to you.
#2 - If someone does you wrong you personally forgive them seven time even if they are not sorry, if they are sorry forgive them seven time seventy.
#3 - Your leaders will be those who can serve and help the most of you for love and not money or fame.
#4 - The goal in life is to see how many you can help, not how much stuff your get.
#5 - The greatest rule in the society is LOVE.
Society B is the opposite, they are seldom willing to be lead unless they see something in it for them, there leader has two teaching
#1 - Me first.
#2 - Rule number one, he who has the gold makes the rules. Rule two if my gun is bigger than your gun, I get your gold.
The question is then asked which society will be the most successful? In the beginning I believe that society A will hands down beat society B. They will work together to raise food, build homes, raise and train the children, care for the elderly and the handicapped. People will want to be part of there group. Society B most likely will stumble along until the strongest gains control and forces the other that are not killed or ran off to submit to his rule. That leader always needs to be on the look out because someone will want to take his place.
Over time both groups will grow. The biggest threat to Society A is internal, group B type people born into Society A will try to take over the group for their own purpose and power. They will try to teach the group that because we are so good we deserve to be in charge of everything. Of course there a members of Group A who understand the reason for their success and will try to maintain a core of members doing the right thing.
Society B will also grow. They are not stupid, just self centered, once they learn why Society A is growing, they will try to imitate it, with a few changes to allow them to maintain their personal power.
I know a lot out there are going to say that I am stereotyping all religious as Good and all Non-religious as Bad, and I am not. There are many Society A people who are non religious, and I believe there are even more religious people who are now Society B types. Just to make sure I am addressing everyone, are there many out there that will say, religion plays no place in this division of cultures?
Now to get back to the original thought, "women got the vote, blacks got equality, some day we will get Gay Marriage". The vote for women, and equate for blacks, if not supported by religion, were not opposed by the religious base, until the religious base can except homosexuality, (I am not sure that I see that happening soon), Gay Marriage supports will be in a bitter battle (war of words please), and it is not out of hate from the religious side that occurs, it is because we believe differently.
